It's indisputable that some of the print industry's greatest achievements have evolved in the last two decades ― first came desktop publishing, then computer-to-plate (CTP) platesetting and now, digital printing. But, these exciting new technologies brought new challenges, as content creators and print providers ventured to build effective and streamlined technology-based digital workflows. It wasn't the simplest of tasks; there were some seemingly insurmountable problems. For example, what file formats would be used throughout the workflow? (Before PDF, the prepress systems in place at the print shop usually dictated the answer.) How would proofing be handled? How could we ensure that files handed off from creative to production to the pressroom would process without mishap and meet everyone's expectations on press? There also was a lack of printing knowledge among content creators. They were well accustomed to creating on screen, but might not have had a keen understanding of how to prepare digital files (native application, PDF or otherwise) in a certain way, according to the print shop's output specifications.
