BREEDING FOR HIGH YIELDING QUALITY RICE FOR GANGETIC PLAINS OF WEST BENGAL

Basmati rice, the nature's gift to this sub-continent is well known for its famous aroma, it also possesses excellent cooking and eating qualities, which are mostly lacking in modem high yielding varieties. In order to blend the quality characteristics with high yield, IR 30 was crossed with Basmati 370 and pedigree breeding method was followed up to F_(10)th generation to obtain stable desirable recombinants. Primarily single plant selections w«re done on the basis of grain yieid and grain characteristics. From F_3 generation and onwards disruptive seasonal selection was practiced among the early segregating lines to obtain stable and adaptable recombinants for the Gangetic plains of West Bengal. In disruptive seasonal selection, first crop was raised during normal rice crop season i.e. Kharif season (June to December) and second crop was raised during next season as Bpro/Summer rice (November to April). Finally, 18 stable homozygous recombinant lines were developed. They were evaluated along with two local popular high yielding varieties viz. Satabdi (IET 4786) and Khitish (IET 4094) as check during kharif 2008 and summer 2009. Five lines showed grain ≥ yield in comparison of standard checks. All the breeding lines showed early maturity (112-120 days) similar to the checks. Four lines possess strong pleasant aroma and among them two lines had grain yield equivalent to that of the checks. Nine lines possess extra long slender grains (>7.5 mm grain length and > 3.0 L/B ratio) and rest of the lines belonged to long slender group (> 6.5 mm grain length and > 3.0 L/B ratio).
