Over the last five decades, the textile industry has witnessed unexpected growth in synthetic fibres, spectacular development in machine engineering, coupled with unbelievable applications of electronics and information technology. Fibre and textile manufacturing facilities have also undergone enormous improvements in automation and simplification. Advances in online testing and quality control promise to have a major impact on the productivity and quality. Fibre and fabric tests, critical to product quality, have relied largely on destructive off-line methods. However, intense global cost pressure, higher consumer expectations, a highly diverse customer base, shorter fashion cycles and reduced R&D investment have all contributed to sluggish growth in the current business climate. The challenge for the future is to revitalize the industry, through technological innovations in products and processes, and to reevaluate business practices in a global context. For the textile industry to succeed in this dynamic environment and to achieve a long-term exponential growth, we must explore all the possibilities of developing appropriate technology, new products and cost effective processes through innovations.
