Plasma Processing of Textile Materials - Is Industry Ready?

摘要

Growing environmental concern, dearth of energy and water coupled with the problems of effluent disposal has prompted technologists to look for alternate "Green Technologies" for textile processing. Plasma technology, which has grown since 1950s, has a strong potential to offer as an attractive alternative to traditional wet-chemistry based process. It will not be an exaggeration to say that we live amidst plasma. Sun which rises every morning is a 'Big Plasma Ball'. The stars, the nebulae, the upper atmosphere and the lightening that flashes are all gaseous plasmas. Domestic tube lights having plasma inside followed by compact fluorescent lamps (CFL), air purifiers, the latest zing being the Plasma TV are all commonly used examples. Plasma came into being with the creation of the universe, but it was not until 1920s that it could be 'tamed', i.e. produced in a controlled way in the laboratory. Thanks to scientists Crook, Townsend, Langmuir and others.
