Thermoluminescence of X-ray irradiated pure and doped alumina powders

Thermoluminescence (TL) and TL spectra of α-Al_2O_3 powders both pure as well as doped with transition metal ion impurities have been studied by X-ray irradiation at room temperature (27℃). With the incorporation of the impurities the TL outputs vary but no change in glow peak positions is noticed. While the TL emission for undoped α-Al_2O_3 powder occurred mainly in two wavelength regions 350 to 490 nm (Ⅰ) and 600 to 650 nm (Ⅲ), three broad emission bands have been observed for doped samples which contained in addition to the regions Ⅰ and Ⅲ an intermediate region Ⅱ extending from 500 to 610 nm. TL phenomena in α-Al_2O_3 are predominantly controlled by trace impurities and the glow peaks are associated with a distribution of trapped holes (0~-, 0°).
