The Indian Shipping Industry's proposals to the Government to provide a fiscal regime on par with the fiscal regimes in other maritime countries of the world to revive and foster the growth of the Indian fleet were supported by the Members of the reconstituted National Shipping Board (MSB) at its first meeting held in Mumbai on 12-2-2002 under the Chairmanship of Mr. V. K. Khanna. In his opening remarks at the meeting, Mr. Khanna stated that Shipping being a highly risk prone and cyclic industry which does not enjoy the benefit of protection through tariff barriers and exposed to severe international competition, it is essential for the shipping enterprise of any nation to adapt very quickly to the fast changing international scenario.
