This is the first seminar of National Maritime Day Celebrations Committee (NMDCC) in the new Millennium and I am very happy to welcome all of you to this seminar. I am also very happy that for this seminar, NMDCC has chosen a theme which is so relevant and of great topical interest to the shipping industry in India particularly because today Indian Shipping is passing through one of the most difficult phases, struggling for survival, in a climate where there is no appreciation for the valuable role that it had played in the past for economic independence of the country and the vital role it can play in the present and in future for the economic growth of the country.
