The Resurrection Lutheran Church in southern Arizona wanted to create a comfortable outdoor gathering and worship space to hold afternoon and evening events. The goal was to create a new sunken patio area that would be shaded and protected from the sun, while leaving the southeast side open to preserve the stunning views of Pusch Ridge in the Santa Catalina Mountains. The project was completed in phases over three years and resulted in 10 square steel columns that support a large cross and nine custom shade sails that utilize 6,632 square feet of shade cloth material. Because the structure stands so tall (the top of the cross is almost 44 feet above the patio), special zoning clearances were required. A crane was utilized to lift the nearly 500-pound cross to the top of the structure. With a diameter in excess of 80 feet and a maximum height that exceeds 43 feet, the structure feels large and airy, spectacular both in design and magnitude.
