It's a no-brainer for Canvas Designers Inc. to have a showroom. The marine fabricator is located on U.S. 1 in Palm Beach, Fla., and gets a lot of walk-in traffic because it's within five miles of 20 different marinas. On the other hand, Baraboo Tent & Awning Inc., Baraboo, Wis., has a showroom, too. The awning manufacturer is located in a small town, has very little walk-in traffic, and caters mostly to commercial customers. Not all showrooms are the same. Canvas Designers devotes 2,400 square feet to its display area, which includes everything from cushions to fully operational models of boat tops. Baraboo Tent & Awning's space could fit in a 20-by-40-foot tent. Some companies get fanciful, while others are perfectly content with a table, some fabric and photo books, and some models of their work. While a shop's location and customer base both influence what goes into its showroom, the room is also a function of the company's style and personality. A showroom says who you are, what you stand for, and what you're trying to accomplish.
