Ethanol is a polar solvent industrial chemical, which means it mixes readily with water, sometimes called a water miscible fuel. It burns with a smokeless blue flame which is quite difficult to see, but has a strong odour. Ethanol provides a renewable energy component to help reduce our fossil fuel usage in gasoline and extend its life, as fossil fuel reserves on the planet start depleting. It shouldn't b( confused with biodiesel, derived from reprocessed animal fat, and vegetable cooking oils or from crops grown specifically for that purpose such as rape seed. Even 100% biodiesel is a standard hydrocarbon, but is more commonly used at a 20% mix in conventional diesel, referred to as B20.
