The memorandum of understanding has been signed by Italian company Virthualis and global technology and manufacturing giant Honeywell International. The agreement aims to build upon the work already carried out by the largest European project on industrial safety - a 15m research programme that ran from 2005 to 2010. The European Union project's aim was to exploit real-time, 3D techniques for human factors applications in safety (Virthualis is the acronym of Virtual Reality and Human Factors Applications for Improving Safety). It culminated in two solutions being installed for emergency response evaluation and training in Norway (Statoil) and Algeria (Sonatrach). In the former the application was gas leak management, and in the latter a (multiple-player) start-up of a gas turbine in a gas processing plant.
