摘要

Superconnected is an ambitious review of the literature on how information and communication technologies (ICTs), primarily the Internet and its related technologies, have impacted social life, covering sociology, communication, and media studies literatures. The central thesis of the book is that people today are superconnected, or at least more connected in more ways than in the past, via ICTs. In Chapter 1, however, Chayko reminds readers that this supercon-nectedness is not evenly distributed across the globe or within the populations of tech-rich societies, citing geographic location, 'socioeconomic status, educational background, race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation and so on' as factors of one's access to and experiences of these technologies of superconnectedness (p. 1). The remainder of Chapter 1 outlines the central concepts of the book: the Internet, digital media, and techno-social life. These concepts are framed around theories of technological determinism (p. 6) and social constructivism (p. 7) and the processes of mediation and diffusion of innovation (p. 8). Chapters 2-9 build from this framework to explore various social impacts of these technologies. Chapter 10 concludes the book with a look to the future and an invitation to the reader for additional exploration on the issues raised within.
