In Children and the politics of sexuality Liza Tsaliki invites readers to recognize that the aversion to exposing children to any form of sexuality is not natural and necessary but is in fact culturally constructed. Tsaliki points out that contemporary anxiety about the sexualization of children in the West is a phenomenon with roots in the historical development of ideas about childhood and the relegation of sexuality to the private sphere. The first half of the book (Chapters 2-4) consists of an overview of the existing debates about childhood sexualization and the historical development of the ideas that underlie this contemporary concern. The second half of the book contains three case studies that illustrate some of these issues: Chapter 5 examines children's responses to sexual content online, and Chapters 6 and 7 examine Greek tween girls interactions with images of celebrities and a make-over game, respectively.
