摘要

In Media and The City: Cosmopolitanism and Difference, Myria Georgiou offers an empirically rich and theoretically sophisticated examination of the interdependent and co-constitutive relationship between media and urban environments. As urban populations rise, and global media intensifies, the city becomes as much of a product of the media through cultural imaginary as a real place that is mediated, Georgiou suggests. Media in the global city become simultaneously a tool for branding and mass communication and a way of mediating and organizing the often complicated, at times paradoxical, relationships between diverse populations. Through a nuanced analysis, the author convincingly argues that the contemporary intensification of urbanization and mediation, through various processes of cosmopolitaniza-tion, enhance the proximity of difference, but also help to sustain the symbolic power of the media.
