摘要

When I was asked to review Coeckelbergh's last book, I first declined the offer. My reasons were many: I am not a philosopher, I am not familiar with current discourses in philosophy, and I am not into electronic technologies. I am an applied researcher, a sociologist of consumption specialising in debt- and payment problems among households, with a particular interest for the financialisation of everyday life. It did not help much: would I do it anyway? So I accepted. Given my academic baggage, I will do it, not from the point of view of philosophy, but from the standpoint of the political economy. I thereby address two of Coeckelbergh's main aims: (i) contributing to a better understanding of the moral and social implications of financial technologies; and (ii) help defining under which conditions more responsible financial practices are possible (p. 4). With the financial crisis still ravaging the lives of households across the world, it is undoubtedly a matter of urgency. So does Coeckel-bergh succeed?
