In Opening the black box: The work of watching, 2015, Gavin J. D. Smith gives a sociological critique of closed-circuit television (CCTV) operations. Moving beyond the simple analysis of surveillance as someone above watching someone below, Smith's work asks us to look into the practice of CCTV operations. Applying a sociological analysis coupled with empirical research of CCTV use in the UK, Smith provides an illuminating, at times amusing and frequently shocking account of what it takes to be a 'watcher'. Beyond the specific focus on CCTV, Opening the black box sheds light on the larger issues of surveillance in practice, and forces us to confront the true costs surveillance technologies.
