Mosco (2004) used the term myth to describe the Network as a prominent storyline of contemporary society. In his new book To the Cloud, he continues to demystify the economy, culture, and discourse of this society. This time the myth that defers criticism is cloud computing. He applies a transdisciplinary interrogation to reveal how this myth illustrates an international political economy. Mosco first traces the history of cloud computing by seeing it as an extension of an earlier form of computer communication and a new development in the use of information technology. The governments of Canada, France, and Chile had invested in computing networks to promote active citizenship and democratic participation. Those networks could be seen as a social utility because they could be shared among remote users and they allowed for multiple programmes running concurrently. Mosco is, however, sceptical of today's cloud computing being a social utility because of concentrated power and control among private companies. The main players in cloud computing are familiar names such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Apple. Hardware companies (IBM, HP, and Dell) and telecommunications giants (AT&T, Verizon) also invest in cloud computing. The US government entrusted Amazon to manage its sensitive data on the cloud.
