As the title implies, this book analyses the influence of culture in the development and exploitation of digital technologies. The author reports on an ethnographic research project on how the London Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) might enhance service and communication through digital technology. The focus of the study is to expose how digital technologies gain meaning, shape specific forms of digital communication and influence take-up in the local community.rnEmploying an anthropological frame of reference, the author explores how the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) in the London Borough of Newham sought to find ways to exploit digital technologies for interactive public communication across various cultural contexts. Motivated by a desire to control crime and develop and sustain safer communities the MPS took part in a pan-European project called Advanced TransEuropean Telematics Applications for Community Help (ATTACH). In this book the reader is presented with a rounded analysis of the particular challenges facing the MPS in Newham in terms of the technological, social, cultural and symbolic issues surrounding the desired technology-mediated dialogue.
