摘要

Social class has become much less fashionable in recent years amongst social scientists as a variable for understanding social action and behaviour. Competing dimensions of social difference, such as gender, race, sexuality or disability, have pushed the explanatory value of social class to the margins of many investigations. Sue North, liana Snyder and Scott Bulfin in the first article of this issue of iCS attempt to re-state the claim that social class is a significant factor influencing young people's use of information and communications technologies (ICTs). The findings from 25 in-depth case studies of young Australians document their digital communication activities both at home and school. Their analysis of the data draws upon Bourdieu's conception of habitus and taste and Raymond Williams' notion of cultural form. It leads the authors to claim that the young people's habitus, informed by social class indicators, such as parental educational achievement or occupation, continues to have a marked influence upon their engagement with ICTs. Such research is important for challenging the technological fix approach to public policy which frequently assumes that it is sufficient to overcome digital divides by expanding ICT resources in schools.
