The overall sense of this useful book is made clear from the start. Henry Jenkins talks about the Occupy Movement as 'less a movement than a provocation', for which 'passing the word was the point'. In the acknowledgements, the research team behind By Any Media Necessary thanks the Harry Potter Alliance for their part in inspiring the project, and also for inspiring young people's civic engagement through the media of popular culture and the extensive community of fans of JK Rowling's Harry Potter book series. By Any Media Necessary is a set of case studies drawn from primary research with a selection of cases in the USA, where the researchers have encountered young people raising their voices, engaging with political issues and institutions, and developing ideas of the political. In studying these cases, which range from pop culture fan communities to online circles of young Muslim bloggers, the authors' emphasis is on provocation more than movement, voice more than power and a young political imagination blossoming in the everyday more than political action with effective outcomes for young people's everyday lives.
