摘要

The difference between Fordism and post-Fordism may be grasped, as well, by the shift from the fixed working day to a world of total work, where there is no time that is not work time. With the help of new information communication technologies (ICTs), the lines between work and leisure have become increasingly blurred. More than simply doing work from home, or homing from work, now there appears to be only a constant flow or stream of connectivity. On the one hand, this appears to create a much more holistic existence for the subjects of contemporary twenty-first-century late capitalism. Apparently, ICTs are convenient for the organization of everyday life in the complex environment of post-Fordist, neoliberal capitalism. On the other hand, it is worth considering the psychical costs of being constantly connected, constantly tethered to the productive apparatus, where labor time more so infringes upon all other aspects of everyday life, rather than flows in the opposite direction. This is the topic of David W. Hill's The pathology of communicative capitalism (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015).
