Designing good web surveys is not easy. An effective survey question is understood as intended by the researcher; if not, validity problems arise. Also, it is answered in the exact format desired by the researcher and not skipped. Otherwise, error messages will appear on screen asking respondents to give their answer in a different format or pointing out to them that they left an answering space blank, which leads to irritation for the respondents and causes them to take longer to fill out the survey. Two articles in Public Opinion Quarterly explore how visual cues can be used to help the respondents interpret survey questions and give the right type of answers. Tourangeau and others investigated how the shading of the answering options in a response scale affects the answers to frequency questions and favourability questions. The use of different hues for the low end and the high end of the scale turns out to affect the perceived extremity of the low scale end. Responses shifted to the high end of the scale.
