The contribution of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to the health sector in Africa is the subject of the first paper in this issue, 'Communication Networking: ICTs and Health Information in Africa', by Tokunbo Ojo. The paper focuses on the benefits that ICTs can bring to African health care systems in the areas of medical information, clinical data exchange, treatment, health education campaigns and international collaboration between African medical experts and their colleagues abroad, and emphasizes that community participation in the use of ICTs in public health in Africa is essential if sustainable social change is to be achieved.
