The state of the Botswana Library Association (BLA) is outlined pointing out that although the association celebrated its twentieth anniversary in 1997, it still has problems of membership recruitment and retention. The results of a survey of librarians in Botswana on what will motivate or discourage members and potential BLA members from joining the association are discussed.
