The first article in this short series (Jan-uary 2003) explored the background to Scholarly Communication Futures, and the second (March 2003) examined the potential implications of Digital Libraries and Repositories. The focus of this final article is how recent trends impact on the aca- demic community in general and on academic publishing in particular. David J. Solomon has argued that the three core functions for the academic community are the rank- ing of scholarship, facilitating interactive communication amongst scholars, and creating a comprehensive archive of scholarly and scientific knowledge. He believes, 'the scholarly community ... holds the key to solving the serial pricing crisis and allowing the internet to be a vehicle for facilitating the dissemination of publicly funded research and scholarship' (Solomon, 2002).
