摘要

The need for tools to address problems of information overload has become apparent. Information seeking is a complex process as often searchers do not know what they are looking for. Information retrieval tools need to be context sensitive and the retrieval process should adapt to users context. Increasingly information is sought from collections with multiple media and genres using multiple modalities and languages. A number of factors affect the retrieval process such as query formulation, matching process and result presentation. Adaptive retrieval, a process in which search process is adapted towards the user needs/context has become more and more important. Effective retrieval systems should learn and predict what information a searcher needs, decide how and when this information should be presented. In order to do this, systems should effectively distinguish between different search goals and searcher preferences. Adaptation can happen in many different ways during an information seeking process. It can be related to user's short-term or long-term needs. It can be related to the specific context of the user or task at hand. This special topic issue of the Journal of Information Processing & Management will address adaptive retrieval approaches.
