As you will have discovered from the last issue, the Australian Research Council (ARC) is an important supporter of research in Australia, funding projects ranging from the use of digital technology in contemporary art institutions to investigating the gender bias in the information technology industry. It is a statutory authority within the Australian Government's Education, Science and Training portfolio, advising the Government on research matters and managing the National Competitive Grants Program (NCGP), a significant component of Australia's investment in research and development.rnIn 2001 the Australian government produced an action plan called "Backing Australia's Ability -Building our Future through Science and Innovation" and provided investment of $3 billion over five years to 2005-2006, which included the establishment of the ARC as an independent body under the Australian Research Council Act 2001. In 2004 the government announced further funding stretching to 2010-2011 of $5.3 billion.
