I am currently delivering the latest round of school library self-evaluation workshops based on our set of evaluation materials published by the Department for Education and Skills (England, the DfES) in 2004. As ever, the school librarian participants start to make progress when they recognize the need to focus on the impact of their services (as well as continuing to monitor service efficiency using traditional usage statistics). The key point made at all these workshops is that impact usually means the impact of services on pupils or teachers. Evidence of these sorts of impact can best be gleaned by asking people questions, or observing them, or inferring change by analysing the products of activities where people have been exposed to the service under review. Inevitably, this means that school librarians will have to resort to qualitative research methods to gauge their impact.
