Escape rooms have boomed in popularity since the first one opened in Japan in 2007. Escape Rooms and Other Immersive Experiences in the Library, by Ellyssa Kroski, defines escape rooms as "interactive games in which groups of participants gather in a room where they must solve a series of puzzles within a specified time limit" (p. 5). There are thousands of commercial escape rooms around the world, featuring a multitude of themes, props, and costumes. Immersive experiences are other types of interactive activities, such as museum exhibits, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios, or live action role-playing (LARP-ing). Kroski's book focuses mostly on escape rooms and the many ways they can be used in libraries.
