The website provides details on instructors' availability and pricing for more than 300 subjects. It offers reviews and bios so you can quickly find a teacher who meets your needs and matches your learning style.In the mid-2000s, TakeLessons' CEO, Steven Cox, was singing and playing guitar in an alt-rock band called Across the Room. The drummer announced he was quitting to take a job as a cook because he needed more money. Cox also had experience in the online world, including serving as managing partner of Reddito, LLC, an ecommerce consulting firm. He wanted to help the drummer find a way to offer online lessons as another source of income.Cox launched TakeLessons in 2006. The San Diego-based company initially focused on music instructors, but then it expanded into other subjects and signed up teachers across the country. Today, the site has nearly 6,500 instructors who teach 2 million students a month.
