Many (if not most) potentially transformational data management programs either can't get off the ground or they wither and die in less than a year. Ironically, the reasons for this always boil down to positioning data as a product rather than as an infrastructure component from the business' point of view. This may work temporarily, but ultimately will fail when contention for funding, time, and resources rears its head.
