In recent years, the internal divisions in the U.S.-on vital matters of governance, economics, and values-have gotten much deeper and angrier. This troubling phenomenon isn't just based on a media report or one's subjective experience; it is thoroughly documented by the Fragile States Index (FSI), a score-card database that calculates the "fragility" of nearly 200 countries. It uses a complex metric to analyze the multiple components of political, economic, and social fragility. And fragility does not occur just in the world's struggling countries. The FSI demonstrates that it can occur in even the world's richest and apparently most stable nations.
