It's just after sundown, and you're driving on a farm-to-market road in a rural stretch between two small towns. You're going to pick up a new friend on the way to see a rare performance by Casino Versus Japan at a tiny nightclub in a nearby city. It starts to rain, and you put on your high beams as you crest a hill. By the time you realize you're speeding, it's too late, and the red-and-blue lights are rushing up behind you. Are you of Asian descent? Black? Brown? White? Are you a woman? A man? Do you identify as nonbinary? Regardless of these answers, you're alone. You don't have any weapons in the car, unless the pocketknife on your key chain counts. But there's an unopened bottle of white wine in a bag with some red chile chips that you're planning to share with your friend later. Your hands start to tingle, and your heart jumps as you pull over. You remember that you gave a ride to your cousin's boyfriend last month, and he reeked of weed-would the cop be able to pick up that scent? Should you reach for the glove box to take out your insurance card?
