In his 2007 acceptance speech for a TED Prize, eminent scientist Edward O. Wilson called for an ambitious new effort in scientific discovery: a grand aggregation of biological information that he named the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL; eol.org). Wilson pointed out that information technologies now allow projects of unprecedented scale and flexibility. The proposed EOL could thus gather enormous amounts of data into a grand portal that could be used by both experts and laypeople.
