The great British social economist and statistician, E.F. Schumacher, spent much of his career at the U.K.'s National Coal Board, the then gigantic bureaucracy whose scale may well have influenced his groundbreaking book, Small Is Beautiful. Libraries are often judged by the scope and scale of their holdings. It's perhaps instructive to visit one that's never been noticed (except by its patrons), made headlines, or been featured at professional conferences, but that echoes and embodies Schumacher's wisdom.
