European Union (EU) ministers who are in charge of digital affairs have been warned that their plans for a web accessibility directive may deny blind and visually impaired people access to online information. The European Blind Union (EBU) and 19 nongovernmental organizations recently sent a letter to the 28 ministers concerned, spelling out what they see as the risks posed to visually impaired people by exemptions in the proposed directive. They claim these exemptions would deny access to such resources as intranets and extranets, existing downloadable documents, third-party content on public sector bodies' websites, public service broadcasters' websites, and sites managed or edited directly by schools and kindergartens.
