Before he could retire, Multi-science director and owner Bill Hughes needed to find a home for the peer-reviewed engineering journals his 54-year-old company publishes. SAGE Publications, which had had a relationship with Hughes for several years prior to his decision to retire, decided to purchase 19 of the journals from Multi-science to help strengthen its engineering and material science (EMS) offerings. "We've had a longstanding informal relationship with Bill Hughes, meeting him from time to time to discuss issues in publishing and his plans. He was open that he would sell at some point, and we had started discussions around a SAGE offer to purchase going back some time," says Karen Phillips, editorial director at SAGE.
