Representatives from many of the major players in open access (OA) gathered together at the Hub Cira Centre in Philadelphia on Nov. 22, 2013, for a workshop organized by the National Federation of Advanced Information Services (NFAIS). Its theme, Open Access to Published Research: Current Status and Future Directions, drew interest from librarians, publishers, researchers, government officials, and others-many in physical attendance and some following virtually. Richard Huffine, senior director for the U.S. federal government market of ProQuest, began the workshop with a history of OA publishing. He described the Federal Research Public Access Act (FRPAA), which would open access to research from agencies with more than $100 million in research expenditures and was proposed in 2006, 2010, and 2012 but was never made into law.
