Back in the Digital Dark Ages-spring 1996 to be precise-your Field Correspondent volunteered for a job at the San Antonio Express-News. He was the baseball writer. Having only recently escaped nights-and-week-ends duty as a copy editor, we were feeling young and eager, even if the local nine hadn't won a Texas League championship since the LBJ era (no, not LeBron James-that other LBJ, Lyndon B. Johnson, president of these United States in the 1960s). As it turns out, the San Antonio Missions were just as wretched in 1996 as they had been in 1995, 1994, and pretty much every year since they had won it all in 1964.
