All you gumshoe wannabes out there might find this column right up your (dark) alley. Two articles from the July/ August issues of Marketing Library Services (MLS) and The Information Advisor's Guide to Internet Research (IAG) are all about digging for answers. In one "case," a library is searching for ways to stay afloat while trying to find out who wants to do it in; in the other, searchers can use a service that might make it easier to uncover hard-to-locate people. Troy Public Library (TPL) is located in Troy, Mich., a suburb of Detroit. The city has a population of 81,000 and is part of Oakland County, one of the highest per-capita income areas in the state. In 2008, Rhonda Hendrickson, a film producer with an M.L.I.S., became a board member of Friends of the Troy Public Library (FTPL), little dreaming she would become part of a 2-year drama that would receive worldwide press. The story she relays in "Troy PL's Battle for Survival: Anti-Tax and Book Burning Threats" (MLS, pp. 1-3,6) has more twists and turns than a James Patterson mystery. In fall 2009 in the midst of a lobby renovation, TPL learned the city was going to have a vote to get citizen funding for roads, public safety, and the library. (The technical term for this type of tax vote is a millage vote.) If the 1.9-mill millage did not pass, the library would permanently close in May 2010. While voters did not approve the millage in the February 2010 election, the city council gave the library until July 2011 to come up with alternative funding.
