For libraries with computers that are nearing the tail end of their life cycles, the prospect of buying a new set of desktops can be a tough decision on a tight budget. Userful Corp., a software and virtualization company, helps public libraries outfit themselves with new hardware and software for public computers while saving 60% to 70% on PC costs. Making computers available to the public can be a troublesome and expensive process, and according to Daniel Griffin, VP of multiplied computing for Userful, "there's got to be a better way to do it than buying a bunch of PCs and adding a bunch of software on them and trying to retrofit a traditional personal computer to make it work for public use." Userful's solution to the problems of the cost, maintenance, and security of public computers is to virtualize the desktops. Instead of buying 15 PCs and paying the full price, libraries can buv one standard, off-the-shelf PC with an Intel Core i7 processor or better and use it to run 14 inexpensive thin clients, which are computers that rely on one host PC to operate through virtualization. The thin (or zero) client devices cost less than $100 each and are available from companies such as HP, Acer, and ViewSonic.
