The question of whether hyperlinks can lead to breaches of copyright law has caused many a scholarly brow to furrow across Europe, so much so that legal scholars from across the continent have given a joint opinion on the issue. The European Copyright Society (ECS), which comprises academic experts in copyright and in-tellectual property law from many institutions across the continent, issued the statement. The ECS includes experts from the universities of Cambridge and Leuven and the Turin Law School. The document gives considered arguments and views on the importance of hyperlinking and whether the use of it to direct users to copyrighted material may be illegal.
