During the 1970s in the early days of online information, librarians and other expert searchers were the only ones doing online searching. Databases had complex record and classification structures, with search interfaces that took weeks to learn and much longer to master and connect-rate pricing that allowed little time to explore and do probing, interactive searches. The searchers were intermediaries who passed the retrieved information to knowledge workers, students, and other so-called end users.
