My first portable computer was a Zenith device with a very noisy keyboard. But the gizmo triggered glares and a request to stop the clicking noise when I tried using it to take notes in a lecture. About 10 minutes into the lecture, the Zenith's battery gave out, and I officially entered the world of peripatetic computing. Now I have a smartphone, which is far more capable than the 1989 Zenith clamshell. The Zenith weighed 6 or 7 lbs. The smartphone weighs 4 oz. If I had a stack of 28 Apple iPhone 5's, the group would weigh as much as my first portable computer.
