A library's most important resource-and something we spend a lot of money on -is our staff. Without high-performing staff members, our resource collections would be underused, and our customers wouldn't be happy. So how can we have the best staff (and service) possible?One way is to develop the people we already have. How do we do this without spending a fortune? Author Marcia Trotta writes that libraries can "design in-house training programs that turn experienced staff into proficient trainers," among other strategies. First, we need to have a good understanding of staff development, what it is, and why we need it.
