If you spend some time with a diamond cutter in Rotterdam, Netherlands, you will learn about marking, cleaving, sawing, girdling, and faceting. Faceting is the last step in a logical sequence of actions. If one of the steps is done wrong, the facet work may have little or no value. In diamond-cutting, the word "facet" refers to the flat faces on a geometric object or, in this case, a precious stone. In search, there is now considerable emphasis on providing suggestions or search assistance often placed under the umbrella notion of a facet. Not only is the term inappropriate for search, it is misleading.
