The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is known as a "society of societies." The AIP is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit membership corporation with a mission to promote "the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics and its application to human welfare." The AIP was founded in 1931 by a group of American physical science societies that wanted to strengthen and consolidate their position during the lean financial times of the Great Depression. The organization, with its current membership of more than 100,000, now supports 10 member societies while offering programs and services to advance the science and profession of physics.
