Ever since Edwin Drake and the Seneca Oil Co. hit the mother lode in the mid-19th century, oil has been king of the U.S. economy. For example, the American auto industry grew on the back of an inexpensive (and presumptively endless) supply of oil. John D. Rockefeller's industrial empire was built upon cunning business deals and eventually the formation and power of the Standard Oil Co.
