In November 2007, Facebook unveiled the Beacon program, "a core element of the Facebook Ads system for connecting businesses with users and targeting advertising to the audiences they want." By December of that year, it changed Beacon from an opt-out to an opt-in service. And by the end of September 2009, Facebook agreed to completely shut down Beacon as part of a settlement in a class-action lawsuit.rnLane et al v. Facebook, Inc. et al was filed on Aug. 12, 2008, in the California Northern District Court. The plaintiffs argued that the Beacon program violated their privacy; specifically, Beacon allegedly violated the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the Video Privacy Protection Act, and California's Consumer Legal Remedies Act and its Computer Crime Law.
