Two significant milestones recently demonstrated the world's increased acceptance of open access (OA) journals. First, the Compact of Open-Access Publishing Equity, released on Sept. 14, featured five of the nation's premier institutions of higher learning-Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the University of California-Berkeley-jointly committing to a compact for OA publishing. Second was the first meeting of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA), which was held Sept. 14-16 in Lund, Sweden. Both of these events made an impact on the world's acceptance of OA.
